HANGING DRYWALL IN REPAIRS & NEW INSTALLATIONS
Hanging pattern, tight seams, accurate screw depth, screw pattern, and accurate space from the ground will help drywall maintain its integrity and prevent finishing and texturing problems.
Hanging drywall in the proper pattern ensures the wall’s integrity and is the primary defense against cracking (especially when settling will occur). Staggering the joints locks them and creates a solid surface to be covered by the preferred finish.
When it comes to tight seams and corners, no drywall seams or corners should be open wider than a quarter-inch (1/4″). Ensuring the drywall seams and corner openings are not wider than a quarter-inch will ensure that they will be strong for many years, protect against cracking and save on material and labor in the mudding process.
Drywall should be hung half an inch of the ground to avoid moisture problems. Drywall should be hung with enough space between the board and the ground to prevent moisture from being wicked up and causing water damage.
FINISHING & PATCHING DRYWALL
Finishing drywall patches and new drywall installs requires skills and expertise. Matching the proper texture, covering valuable possessions and floors, and applying even coats will make any drywall project more efficient and satisfying.
When patching drywall, understanding the existing texture is a fundamental part of creating an invisible repair. Many surfaces exist here in southwest Florida, from hand skip-trowel, orange peel, and spray knockdown textures available in light and heavy application to some projects requiring a smooth finish. In a drywall repair or new install job, the finishing process can become messy without proper preparation. When furniture is present, and near the workspace, it must be covered. When there is existing flooring that the client intends on keeping, it must be covered and protected from any falling compound or footprints.
Even coats of a compound in all drywall finishing work are necessary for adequately concealing joints and tape, preventing an uneven surface, and creating an ideal surface regardless of lighting.
